Interpersonal relations are at the core of human existence.  Our physical health is shaped by the quality of our relationships.  Emotions have a key role in our relationships. Without the ability to experience emotional contact with others a person will exhibit dysfunctional behaviour ranging from a mild autistic condition to severe psychopathology.  The advance in health care and nutrition mean a longer age span and hence concern for maintaining health into our 80s and 90s. Research on aging has shown that loneliness and social isolation are a major hazard for both physical and emotional health.
